How important are interpersonal skills for medical professionals?

Personal skills are the personal and behavioral traits, which determine how people deal in terms of managing themselves and the elements of their surroundings, and include creativity, leadership and analytical skills ... These skills give the individual an opportunity for further professionalism and success in the field of work, especially the prestigious, humanitarian and high-end " the medical profession", which It mainly depends on the skills of communicating with patients and the rest of the medical staff for  the physical and psychological health of the community , so  how important are  interpersonal skills for medical professionals

Emotional smartness :

The importance of emotional intelligence for clinicians is that it helps them increase their empathy for patients who are often frustrated and desperate because of their illnesses, and it also helps clinicians manage stress and tension in their work. According to the statistics published by the NPR medical website, it refers to the official numbers of medical team suicides due to the stress of long working hours and night shifts that lead to psychological crises, and half of American doctors have shown signs of fatigue syndrome. I highlight that emotional intelligence plays a very large role in maintaining the psychological stability of the entire community, based on the commitment of clinicians to it.

A 2017 study of nearly 68 nurses reports that 35% of hospital nurses, 37% of home nurses, and 22% of nurses working in other settings experience a high degree of emotional exhaustion

Communication capabilities

 

The doctor must have communication capabilities that enable him to gain the patient’s trust and motivate him to talk comfortably about all the details of his illness , and help him to accept the diagnosis of his condition and not expose him to a nervous shock that may aggravate his health. He must also be careful not to underestimate the disease and give false hopes about recovery... and to fit all this in an appropriate way that falls under the enjoyment of the abilities of communication.

In a Canadian study, patients' response and convictions about medical care provided by Canadian family physicians were very high, but they were less satisfied with the communication skills used by their physicians, especially with regard to illustration and planning.

Leadership:

As medical professionals, they will always have to lead medical care teams, whether it be  medical staff, an entire department,  or a clinic, to ensure that each individual performs their role to the fullest, and thus, the medical professional must be able To play his role in supporting and directing this team, directing motivation and other characteristics of successful leadership. In the absence of this leader, the entire medical team will be dismantled and no one will know what to do to complete the treatment of patients.

In 1940, Charles Bird presented a paper on the most important qualities of leadership, in which he obtained 20 lists, each containing a set of qualities, most notably : honesty, sincerity, ambition, gallantry, initiative, will, intelligence, integrity, self-confidence...etc

Medicine is a profession that carries all the meanings of high morals, These morals are very important because they affect the psychological factor of the patient, as the relationship between the psychological pressure of the individual and his health and physical condition is a  Inverse relationship and the reason for this is due to physiological changes in the body.

The Chinese used to say "A man without a smiling face must not open a shop"

Attention to detail:

When a patient goes to the doctor, he is not aware of information that may be of greater use to the doctor in diagnosing his health condition. Therefore, the doctor should be more conservative about all the patient's information to the smallest detail that he mentions. Medicine involves accurate measurements, prescribed medications in specific doses, and very detailed procedures to follow.
